The Coal Working Group’s Long-Term goals are to
(1) Prevent the construction of coal plants that emit global warming pollutants.
(2) Replace existing fleet of coal plants with energy efficiency and significantly lower carbon-emitting technologies.
(3) Prevent the exportation of carbon dioxide from RE-AMP states by ending destructive coal mining practices and keeping as much coal in the ground as possible.
The Coal Working Group’s Mid-Term Goals are to
(1) Slow and then stop each new coal plant proposed in RE-AMP states that will emit global warming pollutants, including proposed liquid coal, coal gasification, coal-fired ethanol, and petroleum coke-burning plants.
(2) Force coal plants to internalize the full life-cycle of their environmental and public health costs, including costs related to the mining, transporting, and burning of coal and the disposal of coal combustion waste.
(3) Increase policy-maker support in all of the RE-AMP states for replacing existing coal plants with energy-efficiency and cost-effective carbon-neutral electric generation technologies.
(4) Cause a significant number of existing coal plants to be retired or else retrofitted with significantly lower global-warming pollutant emission rates.
(5) Identify and begin to engage in strategic opportunities to prevent or shut down destructive coal mining projects in RE-AMP states to eliminate exportation of stored carbon dioxide that would be released into the atmosphere elsewhere.
